Creating Your Own Home Yoga Practice

People love yoga. I’ve seen a variety of body types, personality types, people with varying religious affiliations, and those with injuries, who have nothing but positive regard for this ancient art form. Most of them desperately want to come to classes and practice at home. These people succeed at making it to the studio. After all, once their butts get on the mat they’re taken care of. The room is warm (or hot), there are plenty of yoga props to choose from, and the teacher tells them what to do or offers suggestions. Where they falter is implementing a yoga practice in their own home.

I understand the challenges:

Family
-Pets (Cats really like yoga apparently!)
-Lack of proper space
-Time constraints
-Inertia
-Injury or Sickness
-Uncertainty about what to do

The list goes on really….

I’m here to let you know that creating a home yoga practice and actually following through with it is not only possible, but easy! It starts with intent.

Why do you want to practice yoga?
What does it give you?

The answers to these questions will be a guiding force as you begin to implement your routine. Next, make goals that will set you up for success. Here’s an easy one: Practice at home twice per week for at least 20 minutes for one month. Once the month is up, reevaluate. Do you want to keep going with what you’ve got or amp it up? You get to choose. Set yourself up for success. If you go beyond your goal, that is major awesome!

So, what’s the next step? Well, you’ve got to figure out what you want to do in those 20 minutes twice per week. There are a variety of options. You can do a yoga class on DVD. Click HERE to view some that I recommend. You can use your yoga studio class time to discover your favorite poses and do those once you’re home. You can devote that time to simple breathing and meditation. It’s your practice and your life, you get to choose! In my opinion simply getting your mat out and sitting on it for 20 minutes is a win. Check out these simply exercises as options to include during your at-home mat time:

Eye Exercises
Breathing Techniques

To make it even easier for you I’m teaching a workshop coming up Friday February 10th 2012 from 7:00pm – 9:30pm on this very topic, creating your own home yoga practice. In this workshop you will learn how to sequence basic classes and receive hand outs with breathing and pose ideas for your sequence. From there you will actually, with my guidance, create a 20 – 45 minute home practice that best suits you! An added bonus: If you Pre-Register for the class you will receive one free month of once per week email communication with me to help you with questions that come up as you practice.

So, do you already have a home yoga practice? Do you have any advice for those out there who have yet to start? And those of you who have desire, what inspires you to practice at home? Leave your thoughts below. As always, I love hearing from you!
